Today was a remarkable day for our B.O.S.S. Mentorees. At Wahl-Coates Elementary on April 9, they experienced firsthand how public speaking can open doors and build meaningful connections that shape their futures. Joshua Burney of Spoken Solutions, alongside some of our dedicated BOSS mentors, led an inspiring session that left a lasting impression on these young leaders.

Why Public Speaking Matters for Young Leaders
Public speaking is more than just standing in front of a crowd and delivering words. It is a tool that helps young people express their ideas clearly, build confidence, and connect with others. For our B.O.S.S. Mentorees, learning this skill means preparing for a future where communication plays a key role in success.
Many young people struggle with expressing themselves, especially in new or intimidating settings. By practicing public speaking, they learn to overcome fear and hesitation. This confidence spills over into other areas of life, such as school presentations, job interviews, and networking events. For those involved in mentorship programs, it also strengthens their ability to seek guidance and build relationships with mentors and peers.
The Role of Mentorship Programs in Developing Communication Skills

Mentorship programs offered by non-profit organizations provide a safe space for young people to grow. Our B.O.S.S. program focuses on leadership development, and public speaking is a cornerstone of that growth. Mentors guide mentees through exercises that improve clarity, tone, and body language.
During the event at Wahl-Coates Elementary, Joshua Burney shared practical tips and real-world examples. He emphasized how speaking well can help mentees make the right connections for their future careers. The mentors supported this by sharing their own stories of how communication helped them succeed. This combination of expert advice and personal experience made the session relatable and motivating.
Final Thoughts on Building Future Leaders
The day at Wahl-Coates Elementary was more than just a workshop. It was a step toward building confident, capable young leaders who understand the power of communication. Public speaking is a skill that will serve them in school, work, and life. Through mentorship programs offered by non-profit organizations, these young people gain tools that help them connect with others and create opportunities.
If you are involved in youth development or know young people who could benefit, consider how public speaking training can make a difference. Supporting these skills today helps build stronger leaders for tomorrow.
Let’s keep investing in our young bosses and watch them thrive.
